With Kempis Songster
Community activist Kempis Songster, or Ghani as he is known to many, will lead a workshop on Identity and how it shapes our approach to social justice.
Ghani, who had been a gifted student, ran away from home at the age of 15 and got involved in drugs and gangs. He was sentenced to life in Graterford Prison as a result of killing another gang member. But in 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life sentences for juveniles was unconstitutional, and in 2017 Ghani was released from prison after spending 30 years incarcerated. As part of his personal promise to give back to society, he works with community groups to explore the relationships between our personal identities and how we perceive various social justice issues, how we think and feel about those issues, and how we respond to them.
