Life Events

Some moments in life call us back to our Jewish roots. Whether you are a lifelong member of Beth David or are just finding us for the first time now, we would be honored to help you navigate the joyful or difficult moment you find yourself in. Our sanctuary and other spaces are also available for gatherings. To make an appointment to meet with Rabbi Kalisch or Cantor Goodlev, please reach out to Chedva Steranko, clergy assistant.

BABY NAMING & BRIT MILAH

19b

Mazel tov on your little one! The Jewish rituals for welcoming a new baby girl or boy, whether by birth, adoption, or any other means, are a blend of modern values and ancient tradition. We love leading baby namings and brises, whether at the synagogue or at your home. We work with a number of experienced moyels in the area for brit milah. Considering a baby naming for a child who is no longer a baby anymore? We’re happy to help with that, too!

BAR/BAT MITZVAH

Volpp IMG 1347

Most of the children in our congregation study for bar/bat mitzvah through our Religious School, with support and additional learning from our rabbi, cantor, and tutors. Visit our B’nai Mitzvah Portal for lots of resources, or contact Rabbi Koppel for more information about our Religious School.

CONFIRMATION

Teenagers have been pursuing Jewish learning beyond bar/bat mitzvah for decades at Beth David, culminating in the beautiful ritual of Confirmation that takes place on the holiday of Shavuot. Learn more about our teen programs, or come stop by the synagogue to see the hallway of Confirmation class photos going back to the 1940’s!

WEDDINGS

Mazel tov on your engagement! Rabbi Kalisch and Cantor Goodlev both officiate at weddings for Jewish and interfaith couples who want to make Judaism part of their life together. We believe every wedding should be personal, representing who you are as a couple and the home you are establishing together. To learn more about our process, please contact to Chedva Steranko, clergy assistant to set up an appointment with the rabbi or cantor.

FUNERALS

Supporting families through grief and helping to honor the life of a person who has died is some of the most sacred work we do. We officiate at funerals and memorial services for Jews and their loved ones, Jewish or not. If you are a member looking to purchase a cemetery plot in Haym Salomon Memorial Park at reduced rates, please contact our Executive Director, Jill Cooper.

ILLNESS & HEALING

Walking together through life’s most difficult passages is what we do as a Jewish community. We offer a prayer for healing at every Shabbat service, and our clergy and members offer emotional and practical support to anyone coping with illness. We can only help when we know, so the clergy so appreciate when you reach out to let us know that you or someone else in the Beth David community needs support.

CONVERSION TO JUDAISM

Some Jews are born Jewish; others are born with a spark of Jewishness in their soul. If you are thinking about converting to Judaism, we would be honored to work with you. Typically, the process includes both a group class, and independent study with Rabbi Kalisch or Cantor Goodlev. Contact Chedva to make an appointment for an initial conversation with one of the clergy.
