As mentioned in Beth David President, Jane Horwitz’s Yom Kippur address, Beth David has been awarded 477 seedling trees and shrubs for planting on our property by Interfaith Power and Light with funding from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Congregant Noah McAllister (son of Debra Kauffman), who is an undergraduate studying Environmental Engineering and Landscape Architecture, is responsible for generating the list of plants we requested as well as introducing us to a novel approach to using them (the ‘Miyawaki Method‘).
On Sunday, November 10, we’ll be planting all of the seedlings along the north facing side of the building – the strip between us and our Maplecrest neighbors. The ground will be prepared ahead of time with added topsoil and mulch; holes will be pre-drilled so there is no actual digging involved (with so little rain lately, the ground is extremely hard). Bring a hand trowel if you have one.
If you want to be part of the planting team, use this Sign-Up Genius form to indicate your availability either from 9-11 am or 11-3 pm. Children are welcome – no need to sign them up separately! There’s a limit of 12 planting parties in each session, and some slots have already been claimed by Beth David’s Climate Crew, so please check out the registration soon to avoid disappointment.
Let’s get planting!
