ADULT LEARNING:
Rabbi Koppel – Serach Bat Asher: The Coolest Woman in the Talmud You May Have Never Heard of.
Who is Serach Bat Asher, why does she live forever, and why is she so important to the story of the Jewish tradition? Delve into some text with Rabbi Koppel to explore this text.
Cantor Goodlev – “The Many Melodies of Mi Chamocha”
Have you ever found yourself thinking, “Cantor, why can’t you just sing the traditional Mi Chamocha?” Well, if so, come study with Cantor Goodlev about the many melodies of Mi Chamocha! The Torah portion during Shabbat Kehillah includes the famous words of Mi Chamocha, which are chanted with special Shirat Hayam trope. We will explore this biblical tune, as well as various modern composed melodies for this important text and ponder various questions, like: How do composers use rhythm, melody, and harmony to change how we interpret this text in this pivotal scene in our history? How do we choose different options on a given Shabbat to suit our needs of the given week? We will sing some together and participants are also welcome to bring their favorite melodies as well.
