Beth David, June 26, 6-8:00pm
You will have an opportunity to make your voice heard about an injustice in our current immigration laws. Thanks to congregant Audrey Knoll for alerting us to this HIAS-sponsored initiative.
Here is the background. In order to get a green card or be naturalized, undocumented immigrants must pay a fee, sometimes as high as $1500. Currently, if a family shows they use SNAP (food stamps) or any other means-tested benefit they are able to get the fee waived. The current administration wants to eliminate this provision and instead require individuals to show their tax returns. The problem is that not every person is employed, and therefore can’t show that he or she qualifies for the fee waiver.
We can let the administration know that we oppose the abolishment of this provision by writing a letter or an email. The government is obligated to read every unique comment written and respond to them before they can pass the regulation.
The last day the government accepts comments is July 5. Any comments received after then will not be counted nor responded to.
We will provide letters, pens, envelopes, and other resources (plus a light dinner). Bring a laptop if you prefer emailing. This is a great way to show Beth David’s support for immigrants and it is an event appropriate for all ages, kids included.
If you can’t make it, we will let you know how you can do this from home, but please RSVP to so we know how many to expect.
For either how to do from home, or to RSVP contact Helene Bludman.
